Akyrtas
Akyrtas is a mysterious archaeological complex from the 8th–9th centuries, located 40 km from Taraz in Kazakhstan’s Zhambyl Region. It is considered one of the country’s most enigmatic historical sites. Built from red sandstone, Akyrtas consists of large rectangular structures. Scholars speculate it may have been a palace, fortress, or religious center. The construction was never completed. Underground passages and water systems have been discovered. In 2003, it was added to UNESCO’s Tentative World Heritage List. Akyrtas stands as a unique cultural monument along the ancient Silk Road.
