Charyn Canyon

Charyn Canyon is one of Kazakhstan’s most spectacular natural landmarks, located in the Almaty Region along the Charyn River. It is famous for its dramatic rock formations, deep gorges, and rare ash tree groves. Formed around 12 million years ago, the canyon stretches 154 km and reaches depths of 150–300 meters. Its most iconic section, the Valley of Castles, features rock formations sculpted by wind and water into shapes resembling fortresses and towers. The Charyn River flows through the canyon, sustaining its unique ecosystem. A rare relict Sogdian ash grove, found only in Kazakhstan and North America, is preserved here. Since 2004, the canyon has been part of the Charyn State National Nature Park. It is a prime destination for hiking, photography, and eco-tourism.
