Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre

The Alisher Navoi Opera and Ballet Theatre is Uzbekistan’s premier performing arts venue, inaugurated in 1947 in central Tashkent. Its origins trace back to the 1920s with a concert-ethnographic ensemble founded by Mukhiddin Kari-Yakubov. The building was designed by Soviet architect Alexey Shchusev, with contributions from Japanese prisoners of war. In 1959, it gained academic status, and in 1966, it was designated a “Bolshoi” theatre. Today, it hosts classical opera, ballet, and national performances, symbolizing Uzbekistan’s cultural excellence on the global stage.
