Registan Square

Registan Square is the historic heart of Samarkand, featuring three majestic madrasahs: Ulugh Beg, Sher-Dor, and Tilla-Kari. It is one of Central Asia’s most iconic architectural ensembles. The name “Registan” means “sandy place” in Persian. In medieval times, it served as a commercial and administrative hub. Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1420) is renowned for its astronomical legacy. Sher-Dor Madrasah (1636–1646) features striking tiger mosaics. Tilla-Kari Madrasah (1646–1660) is famous for its gilded dome and lavish interior. Registan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001.
