Shahr-i-Zinda

Shahr-i-Zinda, meaning “The Living King,” is a historic necropolis located in the northeastern part of Samarkand, Uzbekistan. It is linked to the legend of Qutham ibn Abbas, a cousin of Prophet Muhammad. The complex was built over eight centuries, from the 11th to the 19th, and includes more than twenty mausoleums and religious structures. During the Timurid era (14th–15th centuries), it became a showcase of exquisite tilework and architectural innovation. Situated on the southern slope of ancient Afrosiab, Shahr-i-Zinda is one of Central Asia’s most sacred pilgrimage sites and a visual masterpiece of Islamic art.
