Hippodrome in Ashgabat
The State Hippodrome in Ashgabat is located on the edge of town and acquired its current appearance after a major reconstruction in 2008. The grand opening was attended by diplomatic representatives and President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. On that day, the winners of six races were awarded presidential prizes totaling 18 cars. The glass building at the end of the complex is shaped like a horseshoe, housing an open amphitheater for 1,000 people and a closed hall for celebrations accommodating 500. Spectators can grab a snack at one of six cafeterias, which imitate Turkmen yurts, serving both national and European dishes. In 2013, a monument dedicated to the famous Akhal-Teke horses appeared near the racetrack. The Akhal-Teke Horse Day is celebrated in Turkmenistan every April.
